Beginning Free Motion Quilting
Layering your quilt top with batting and backing starts the magic—but quilting adds the love! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn essential skills to prepare and quilt your projects with confidence.
Together, we’ll cover:

How to layer your quilt top, batting, and backing

Pin basting methods (a healthier alternative to sprays)

The pros and cons of different batting types, with real samples to compare

Quilt marking tools, their uses, and when rulers can replace marking

The basics of both free-motion quilting and quilting with rulers
Through demonstrations and practice, you’ll discover how to shift from “drawing with a pencil” to “drawing with your machine.” You’ll practice in pairs to retrain your quilting brain and then move onto your own quilt top. Your instructor will guide you through using the proper feet and rulers on your domestic machine, giving you the foundation to add texture, interest, and creativity to every quilt.

| Instructor Bio: | Twila Richter, a Twin Cities quilter and teacher, discovered her passion for art quilting after being inspired by Caryl Bryer Fallert’s work. Her quilts have been exhibited nationally, including at the Museum of the American Quilter Society in Paducah, KY, and one now resides at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. An award-winning quilter, she enjoys sharing her expertise through classes and presentations at quilt shops and guilds. |
